Michael B. Press was first appointed Interim Johnson County Administrator in May 1999 and later named County Administrator in April 2000. A career that began in 1976 as a paramedic for Med-Act culminated with his appointment as County Manager in December 2001.

As County Manager, Mr. Press serves as the chief administrative officer and oversees the administrative functions of Johnson County Government in a county with more than 500,000 people, 20 incorporated cities, and a land area of 477 miles. He is responsible for the preparation and submission of the county’s annual operating and capital budgets, totaling more than $600 million.

The County Manager appoints all county department directors. He is accountable for organizational performance, achievement, and service delivery in the daily operations of Johnson County and the implementation of polices and directives established by the Johnson County Board of Commissioners.

As the head of the county’s management team, Mr. Press oversees the overall operation of 38 departments, offices, and agencies with more than 3,700 employees. A full-service government, Johnson County provides a myriad of services and programs, including public health and human services, criminal corrections, homeland security, public safety, public transportation, land use planning, public works, parks, libraries, voter services and wastewater treatment.

Mr. Press received a Master’s Degree in Management from Baker University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Allied Health from the University of Kansas. He is also a graduate of the Management Excellence Program from the University of Virginia.

Mr. Press has lived in Johnson County since 1957. He and his wife, Carol, have one son, Daniel.
